All in all I have to say that 34 Pieces of You completely surprised me - I neve thought it'd be this good! I can only recommend it - even to people who don't exactly love contemporary.
Honestly, though, those are just smaller complaints. The real problem is still that I just didn't connect with the characters or the story, even though most elements are things I usually love about books. Maybe I'll reread 34 Pieces of You one day under different circumstances, and I'll definitely read any future release by Carmen Rodrigues, but I just didn't love it this time around.
Jess, Sarah, and Jake are three people who were very close to Ellie, but each in different ways. They all feel guilty after she dies and we only learn why as the novel progresses. Not only is 34 Pieces of You told in alternating points of view, it also goes from the present to the past. This helps give the reader a solid idea of both what is happening after Ellie's death and what happened before Ellie's death. There is a lot of emotion packed into this book, but it is a quick read.
If you’re like me and like dark, sad contemporaries, I highly recommend 34 Pieces of You. It’s a very fast read and even though it’s a sad book I didn’t find it to be a horribly heavy read.
