In general, Christian Scientists believe that sickness and disease have no physical basis, and hence, anything that causes them to deviate from perfect health can be corrected by divine healing alone. Through prayer, Scripture, and application of the concepts presented in and other writings of Mary Eddy Baker, Christian Scientists believe that they can attain and maintain perfect health. Yet, the Bible does not support the Christian Scientist idea that disease is an affliction of the mind/spirit and not the body and therefore, it is not consistent with a biblical worldview.
2. Jesus Christ is acknowledged to be the means by which individuals achieve healing. While physical healing is an important element of life, Christian Scientists believe that healing also involves character transformation, harmony in relationships, schooling, career, marriage, mental health and every other aspect of life. All of these kinds of healings are believed to be accomplished through prayer.
Family members they urged Kilmer to seek treatment for his neck but he refused because of his Christian Science beliefs. They say he shunned medical treatment and anyone who persisted in pleading with him to seek medical attention was cut out of his life.
Above all, Christian Scientists believe in the saving, healing power of God’s love – that no one is beyond redemption, that no problem is too entrenched or overwhelming to be addressed and healed. They believe that salvation through the presence of God’s goodness is available here and now, not at some point in the future.
