    As we count down to Friday’s mainstage World Music Sampler: Sounds of Africa and the Middle East at the Winspear, there are a number of exciting, Ethnomusicology-themed free events April 2 to 4, hosted by the University of Alberta’s Department of Music, folkwaysAlive! and the Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology:

    The University of Alberta’s and the will share the Winspear stage this Friday, April 4 at 8 p.m. with two special international guest artists, Gideon Alorworyie, one of Ghana’s foremost virtuosos of traditional music and dance and Professor of Music at the University of North Texas, and Professor George Kyrillos, celebrated Egyptian composer, performer, and conductor. The World Music Sampler 2014 concert centres around Sounds from Africa and the Middle East, and features the traditional drumming, dancing and singing of Ewes from Ghana, Togo and Benin, as well as traditional Coptic liturgical music from Egypt, and songs from the Levant, Iraq, and North Africa.
