Synopsis

‘New Zealand’ and ‘fashionable’ – two words rarely uttered in the same sentence by cocky Australians. What could little New Zealand, we ask, ever offer the wealthy sophisticates of Europe and North America? Quite a lot it seems.

“The world is a scary place today”, American Yevrah Ornstein told reporter Michael Peschardt, “Come here and it’s a safe haven”.

The ‘safe haven’ in question is Queenstown, located high in the snow-capped mountains of New Zealand’s South Island.

Originally from Washington, Ornstein came to New Zealand in the wake of September 11 – attracted by the beautiful scenery, the cheap land, and the splendid geo-political isolation. Today he lives in a converted hunting lodge with stunning views from every room.

“I hope this does not sound selfish but to be quite truthful, this is where I want to be”, Ornstein explained to Peschardt, “ I don’t want to live in fear. I don’t want to live in a place where people are concerned about being attacked”.

Osama bin Laden is the real estate agent’s newest best friend in these parts. Queenstown is experiencing a terrorism inspired land boom, and property here is now more expensive than in Auckland’s CBD.

But some of the locals aren’t happy about this influx of cashed-up foreigners. Even Hollywood heartthrob, New Zealander Sam Neill, who owns a vineyard and home in the area, isn’t thrilled that his little piece of heaven is being over-run by international Sea Changers.

“I welcome the idea of immigrants from all sorts of places. I don’t want to see the place choc-a-bloc”, he told Peschardt, “I think one of the reasons this country is relatively free of tension is we are not overcrowding each other”
